Currently, a trending topic going around the internet and social circles is self-love. While I absolutely adore the concept, it’s not so easy to follow and adhere to on a daily scale like some are suggesting.

The concept of self-love is that you not forget about your personal needs, goals, wants, desires, etc. Once you’ve remembered all of these, focus on them a little bit every day or as often as possible. While having wants and dreams is all well and good, it can be really hard to fit them in to all the responsibilities life demands of us. Check out the many ways you can improve yourself in 10 minutes a day.

Where To Start…

Having to fit in everything from work, kids, schooling, meals, pets, cleaning, etc. can be daunting much less trying to focus on anything extra. Self-love often feels more like a splurge or comes off that way. However, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Self-love is connected to the concept of not forgetting to improve ourselves or slowing down to appreciate ourselves and the time we have before it’s too late. Doing this doesn’t have to take a ton of effort. It can be common for us to believe that improving ourselves is going to take a lot of effort, focus, and time. Although this is true, all the effort, time, and focus doesn’t have to be done all at once and in one big hoorah. It can be spread out over time and still get accomplished.

For example, people who want to learn to do the splits don’t just do it over night. They do it for just a few minutes once or twice a day and over time, they eventually can do the splits. Improving ourselves can be tackled in the same manner. Just taking ten minutes a day to improve yourself is doable even if it’s done before bed, while we’re in the shower, whenever.

8 ways to improve yourself in 10 minutes a day

Breathe

This is a super simple concept but one that has helped a plethora of people and is well documented throughout history. Many of us would like to improve our attitudes, anxiety, and overall outlook towards our day.

One of the best ways to start off even the worst of days is taking a few minutes to put everything else out of our minds and just breathe. If you think this one simple concept won’t do squat, I dare you to try it just for a week. Taking ten minutes to stop and breathe deeply and calmly at some point in your day will make a big difference.

Learn

An elderly gentleman once told me that when someone stops learning, that’s when they have truly died. Learning something new, even if it’s just a word, excites us and opens up our perceptions. Taking just ten minutes to learn something new will improve not only your knowledge base but, it also can help with a person’s demeanor, feelings of self-worth, mood, and more.

Nap or Rest

What?? Nap for ten minutes?? Strangely enough, when you’re tired, a quick catnap feels amazing and usually is enough to boost you through your day. Even if you can’t fall asleep or are afraid to, just rest. Don’t’ focus on doing anything, just allow your body and mind to be at ease. If anything, do this for your health. Studies have shown that even just relaxing for ten minutes out of the day can reduce stress considerably which is vital since stress can literally kill people.

Write

Writing in a journal is a popular way of helping one’s self to grow. Writing down problems, thoughts, etc. can help us get them off our mind but, continue to gradually work on them. Eventually, you will look back in your journal and realize the growth and changes you made in yourself which is encouraging and allows for even more change and growth. If you’re not a journal person, then maybe you’ve always wanted to write a book. Take those ten minutes a day to write a page or two and eventually, you’ll have your book. I’ve always had fun writing letters to people when I have the time. Writing letters is a lost art and can not only be a great way to keep in contact with people but, to also brighten someone’s day and bless them.

One of my all-time favorites is to write out my goals, desires and what’s important to me. This might be considered a chore to some, but to me, it is grounding. It is well documented by the top personal development gurus to work and who knows, you might accidentally become more successful in the process. Check out some of my favorite Dale Carnegie articles and related books, such as The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People for useful insight on the topic of writing out intentions, goals, etc.

Organize

When life gets busy, it can also get messy and cluttered. Maybe your garage has turned into a disaster or your craft room has exploded. Take just ten minutes a day to organize a portion of a room. As you finish one room, move to the next. You can be amazed at what you can organize in just ten minutes!

Check on a Friend

Life can have a crazy way of pushing important people out of our life. We need friends and family in our life and taking time for them is important. Sometimes, it’s not until they pass away, they move away, etc. before we regret not taking more time for them. Use your ten minutes a day to call/text/email a grandparent, friend, etc. to let them know you care and just to check in on them.

Treat Yourself

It’s definitely easy to forget to pamper ourselves sometimes. Even if it’s something small like getting an ice cream cone or buying a new top, it still feels good. Take ten minutes to treat yourself and make your own day! Treating yourself could also be someone as simple as using a luxurious lotion on your feet and hands and actually taking a moment to appreciate the sensations of it. How wonderful does the lotion smell and feel? Paying attention to small things like this can change a small normal task into something that is self-pampering.

Be Active

If it means just walking outside your office building for a few minutes, get up, stretch your legs, and move around. Sitting in one place or being confined can be daunting on a person’s productivity. It’s scientifically proven that even a short five-minute break can improve a person’s functionality by quite a large percent. Even a few minutes of exercising has proven to increase life expectancy.

There are many ways we can utilize just ten minutes a day to improve ourselves. The suggestions above are a start. However, get more specific with yourself. What is something you’ve always wanted to learn, accomplish, or have time to fit in? Break it down and find a way to fit it in to ten minutes a day and improve yourself gradually.
